FRIENDS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

DES MOINES

Connecting community members & international students in friendship in lowa since 1971

Why You Should Be A Part

As a Friend, you (and your family) will enjoy the pleasure of getting to know a student who comes from a different background, yet shares the value of cross-cultural friendship. You will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural, religious and political beliefs and personal background of your student in a way that comes only from an ongoing friendship.

Your student will appreciate practicing English conversation and learning about life in the U.S. from you as you offer hospitality and share our culture.

Many Friends continue with their student after the initial academic year and some maintain contact for years

After joining FIS, I made a lot of friends through the International Student Club during the events  and improved my communication skills. I no longer hesitate to ask for help. FIS has been impactful in my life in many ways. It built my confidence, pushed me out of my comfort zone. I’m thankful to all the host families who are part of FIS, especially, Teresa and Kasin. They reminded me of my parents when we made dinner together, hangout and had small conversations about my study field. I am not gonna lie, those were such golden times!
– Mi Su A.

Who Can Be An FIS Friend?

Anyone genuinely interested in international exchange is encouraged to apply. “Friends” range in age from college age to senior citizens; they are singles, couples and families. Participants come from all walks of life and have all kinds of experiences.

Being involved with FIS has been one of the most rewarding and game-changing experiences as a student, as a foreigner, and as a human being. I have learned so much about the U.S. and about its people in ways that otherwise wouldn’t have been possible. I would absolutely recommend to international students to be part of this community, especially the ones who are interested in learning about the culture of the place they are living in, and are looking for new experiences. Thanks to Mark and Denisse for being such a nice host family and for making this program possible!
– Antonio J.

After one year we have been knowing each other, I want to say thank you to everybody especially Mark, Denise, Tim, Connie, and other families. Thank you for being willing to make friend with us. Living and studying in a country that the language is not our first language, so it is really difficult for us to make friend or adapt living enviroment in America. However, I feel lucky because of the existance of FIS. Your kindness, openness, and constant encouragement have helped me feel more at home in a place that once felt so unfamiliar. Every moment shared with FIS whether it was during meals, conversations, game nights, or simply spending time together has made a meaningful impact on me. You made me feel seen, heard, and accepted just the way I am. I feel that our community not only a community but also a family. I want to say thank you for being friend with us.
– Ky Binh H.

Being part of FIS this past year was truly amazing. Everyone was super kind, and I always felt included and appreciated. One of my favorite moments was going to the shooting range. I’m really thankful for all the good memories and friendships I’ve made through FIS.

What Is Expected of FIS Friends?

  • Friends are encouraged to make contact monthly by text or getting together.
  • Once matched, together you can decide what to do depending on time and mutual interests.
  • Students appreciate invitations to American holiday festivities and meals. Typical activities such as movie nights, making food or baking, athletic events, visiting local places of interest or attending a downtown festival are ways to get to know each other.
  • Some students do not have a car so you may need to provide transportation.
